 Toolkit Instructions

Step 1: Measure how inviting a space is to women and people of color

OPTIONAL: If you want to evaluate the impact of this toolkit, you will need to give the pre-toolkit survey to people in the space before you do the toolkit activities, and then ask the same people to complete the post-toolkit survey after you do the activities.

Use the Space Inclusion Quotient Test (Space IQ Test) below to assess how welcoming a space feels to women and people of color. You can measure the Space IQ of an entire building, or just focus on a room, hall, floor, department, or other area. You can also measure the Space IQ of an outdoor area, such as a park, street, or public square.

Step 2: Revamp the space with quick fixes or big remedies

See below for evidence-based ideas. Make sure to take before and after photos, and share your experience with us. We might feature your story on this website.

Quick Fix: Name rooms, lounges, patios, and other areas after women and people of color

Big Remedy: Rename buildings after women and people of color

Problem: Women’s or all-gender bathrooms are few and far between

Quick Fix: Add plenty of signage leading to women’s and all-gender bathrooms

Big Remedy: Add and clearly mark all-gender bathrooms

Problem: Chilly temperature

Quick Fix: Boost indoor temperature to 72-79 degrees Fahrenheit (22-26 degrees Celsius)
