  You Are

A course instructor in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) who wants women to do well in your class

  The Problem

The stereotype that women are bad at STEM leads some women to underperform in their courses

  The Solution

A short writing task deflects harmful stereotypes

  The Result

Women earn higher grades and enter STEM fields, weakening stereotypes

How to Do This Activity (1 hour)

1. In the first week of class, give all students the writing exercise

2. Before the midterm exam, give the writing exercise again

3. At the end of the course, compare men’s and women’s grades
